What is IELTS?

IELTS is an acronym for The International English Language Testing System. This is world-wide accepted test to measure the language proficiency of people seeking to study / work in countries where English is used as language of communication. Students or job aspirants from non-native English speaking countries are required to demonstrate their proficiency to read, write, speak and understand English by means of IELTS examination. The test is designed by the Cambridge University and jointly managed by IDP and British Council.

Why do students need to write IELTS exam?

IELTS is widely accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for study, work and migration in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, as well as for study and work in the USA although each country sets its own IELTS requirements. In most countries where English is the main language of communication, it is a prerequisite for applicants and international graduates seeking professional registration to provide evidence of acceptable English language skills. Requisite proficiency levels vary with respect to the organizations, professions, by country and jurisdiction. It is up to individual professional registration bodies to determine the IELTS band score and version of the test (Academic or General Training) they require.

IELTS Version

IELTS is offered in two versions IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Both versions of IELTS serve different purposes. The selection of one version over the other depends on the academic institution/work/professional/ visa requirements of the applicant.

IELTS Academic: This exam version is extensively supported by the institutions that recognize IELTS. This version of IELTS test is designed to assess how ready you are to begin studying or training in the country with English as medium of communication and teaching. It is usually required to be taken by aspiring applicants to the university/college and professionals in the field of medicine, nursing, and engineering etc.

IELTS General Training: This version of IELTS test intends on assessing your basic survival skills in social and workplace contexts in the English speaking countries. The test is usually taken as visa requirement in case of migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. Additionally, if you are planning to undertake training program or secondary education in native English speaking countries you will be required to take this version of the test.

Test Format

Both Academic and General Training formats of IELTS exam are divided into 4 sections.

Section Academic General Training
Listening Candidate`s ability to understand lectures and conversations in various Western accents, primarily British is tested in this section. The test duration is 30 minutes and additional 10 minutes for transferring answers to the answer sheet. Reading This section is designed to measure the ability to apprehend descriptive, factual, and analytical passages. This test is 60 minutes long with 40 questions divided in 3 sections. You are given 60 minutes to write this test. There are 3 passages each followed by 10-14 questions making total of 40 questions in this section.

  • Section 1 generally has 2 or 3 short paragraphs on factual texts.
  • Section 2 mostly has on 2 short paragraphs based on factual texts.
Writing In this test you are given 60 minutes to complete 2 tasks.

  • In task 1 you are asked to describe describing tables, graphs, charts,        in a minimum of 150 words.
  • Contribution of task 2 of the total writing score is twice of task 1. In task        2 you have to write a 250 word long essay on the specified topic.

  • In Task 1 you are required to write a 150 words long formal/ informal        letter on a given situation.

Speaking This test is conducted in a face to face interview format generally lasting for about 11 to 14 minutes. The test is usually in 3 sections.

  • In section 1 examiner asks questions related to your introduction etc.
  • In section 2 you are asked to speak for 2 minutes on a specified general        topic
  • While in section 3 you face follow up questions related to the topic in        section 2.

Band Allocation

Candidates are scored on a band scale of 1 to 9 in each part of the test, listening/ reading/ writing/ speaking. These bands demonstrate candidate’s proficiency in English. IELTS results are valid only for 2 years. There is no pass or fail system in IELTS test.

PTE

The Pearson Test of English Academic

Pearson Test of English Academic is a computer-based academic English language test comprising of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking designed to assess English proficiency of non-native English speakers, seeking to study in countries with English as main medium of communication. The test is acknowledged by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) and Australian DIAC for student visas.

The test is taken on a computer in a secured environment in a single session of 3 hours. The Speaking part of the exam is also done on the computer. The voice is recorded and sent for marking. The results are delivered within 5 days.

The Pearson Test of English General

The Pearson Test of English General is designed to reward positive achievement in English language learning.

The Tests is conducted in 2 parts and 6 Levels.

  • The writing tests comprise of listening, reading comprehension and writing skills.
  • Levels 4 and 5 are recognised for admission to UK universities and by many international companies.
  • PTE General Test is taken in the month of May, June, August, November, December.
  • The test fees are set by each centre. These tests are priced quite reasonably.
